With the
entertainment business being one of the most lucrative for young people and the
music aspect somewhat the most important and most lucrative of them all it is
not farfetched to say that song writing has become a very big part of
entertainment.
But just writing
any song wouldn’t cut it, it has to be a good song, one everyone will love to
listen to all over and over again, thence, the need to learn to write songs, not
just songs but to write good songs.
Although song writing requires talent, it
should also be regarded as a skill to be learned and I will be giving you few
basic knowledge to develop your song writing skill in four different parts.
So
let’s begin;
1.
Learn the basics
of a musical instrument:
For a song
writer a musical instrument is a tool to play out your ideas of a song and hear
how it sounds. So as an aspiring song writer you need to learn the basics of an
instrument most preferably a piano or a guitar which can serve as both lead
instrument and for rhythm. Although a basic knowledge will help write songs, an
advanced knowledge of such instrument will help you sound better and help make it
easy for you to handle technical aspects of songs.
Also read up
on basic musical instruments because by understanding the technical aspects of
music you’ll have a better idea of what notes sounds better together.
2.
Take music
classes:
Just as in
schools you learn from people with more knowledge and experience, taking music
classes will help sharpen your skills and make you a better song writer.
3.
Analyze
great songs (especially hit songs):
Whether you
like a song or not as long as the song became a great song or a hit for some
reason, it means the song writer succeeded in writing of the song. So pick some
of the greatest hits from anywhere, from countdowns, i-tunes and most
preferably billboards etc., analyze these songs and decipher what makes them
great.
Also analyze
great lyrics, because lyrics are practically the most important aspect of a
song in almost all genre of music (meaning good rhythm + bad lyrics = a bad
song). Have an ear for great lyrics this can help inspire you to write good
songs
NOTE: don’t
settle for only songs you like or a genre of music that you like because some
great lyrics that might be useful to you can be written in a genre of music you
do not listen to.
Also note
that the songs you are listening to have been produced with quite an amount of
money so don’t bother about sounding as perfect as they sound.
4.
Pair up with
another song writer:
You know the
saying two heads are better than one, yeah, it is also applicable here. Teaming
up with another writer can help compensate for certain shortcomings, especially
if the other person is good at something that might be your weakness. Also
pairing up with another can really inspire one.
