Nigerian
entertainment and especially the music industry has evolved over the years with
new acts coming up and old acts rebranding themselves and giving back to back
hit tracks and thrilling tunes, beats and soul touching lyrics that has kept
Nigerians, Africans and the world in general on their feet just like their
counterparts in especially the USA. Being on a track or collaboration with an
international act (especially acts from the USA) has been a dream for some 20
or so years ago but today some Nigerians has achieved this feet and we are
going to be looking at some of them especially the ones that came as a surprise
1. P-square ft
Rick Ross,
After a collaboration with their then new
signed artist MayD and Akon, “Chop my money” Remix, this twin gave a full album
of international collaboration with the likes of Rick Ross, T.I, . This was
after a failed attempt to release a track with Usher a few years earlier. The
unanticipated collaboration on the album and the Album as a whole was a proud export of Nigeria
After a while anticipating a song from the
friendship brewing between Drake and Wizzy, Drake finally released a single
featuring Wizkid, ‘One Dance’ and although most people laughed at it claiming
that Wizkid was barely in the track, Wizkid gave a response by featuring Drake
on his track titled ‘Closer’. Let’s hope that Wizkid is getting ‘Closer’ to the
Grammy
3. R -Kelly ft
Wizkid
Still on the Wizkid matter, 2016 was a great
year for the music sensation who added a number of laurels to his cap. Including the first
Nigerian artist to be on the top of the I-tunes chat and of cause the
collaborations with Drake, he also was featured on a track with R-Kelly ‘I just
want to thank you’.
4. Frank
Edwards ft Don Moen
International collaboration is not just for
circular music and Frank Edwards has proved this by releasing two wonderful
tracks with Music Icon, “Musevangelist” (I just made this word up) and award
winning song writer Don Moen. The song whose chorus is written in Igbo language
got so many attentions as the Veteran Musician Don Moen thrills fans with his articulate
pronunciations of the Igbo words with ease
5. Nathaniel
Basssey ft Micah Stampley
Nathaniel Bassey (click for other articles on
Nathaniel Bassey) has been known for dishing out wonderful gospel songs and one
of such songs is the 3rd track on his ‘This God is too good’ Album
titled “This God is too good” featuring Micah Stampley. I guess this God has
been very good to Nigerian music.
Nigerians have since done more collaboration with international
stars but these once were the ones that blazed the trail. It is also important
to note that a number of Nigerian artist like D’banj, Samsong and host of others, before this time had
performed on stage with international acts but with no song recorded with said
artists.
