Tips 4 - Learn your lyrics and understand it
Singing is a lot like making a presentation
if you don’t know what to say you will be lost and whatever you are trying to
convince your listeners become a lost cause, this is applicable here. In one of
the blind audition episode of ‘The Voice’ a guy wasn’t picked because the one
judge that had space for him couldn’t hear what he was singing, he had a nice
voice and was confident but because he didn’t know the lyrics properly he lost
out. Don’t let you voice deceive you when people listen to a song they want to
hear something especially when they already know the song, so mumbling and
jumbling your words can just make you lose their attention.
Secondly, if you don’t know the lyrics how
can you express it? Trust me when I say expressing a song is the major part of
a performance.
Tip 5 - Listen to the song very well and when
it applies watch other performances of the song
Because you don’t have to perform a song like
the original owner, hearing different versions or watching different
performances of a song can help give you ideas of things to help spice up the
song. You don’t necessarily have to perform exactly like the versions you
watched or listened to but with those versions in mind you can easily get an
idea of another version probably much better than the ones you have heard.
However, if the song is an original you’ll
need to apply emotions and expressions to give a worthwhile performance which
should be easy since the song was written by you.
Tip 6 - Learn proper microphone holding
techniques
Although most people seem to take this for
granted depending majorly on the goodness of the sound system, some even go as
far as covering the head of the microphone. It is very important that you hold
your mic properly and move it properly. If you close the head of the microphone
where do you want the sound to go through? If you hold the mic too close to
your mouth while pitching a high note do you know how terrible you will sound?
If you hold the mic too far from your mouth how do you expect us to hear you? So
learning mic holding techniques can help balance your performance. For a
detailed ‘microphone holding technique’ article.
