Day in day out and even in movies we use
phrases and adages to depict or pass certain messages especially to the younger
generations without knowing their origin, how they came about or who framed
them, for example; how does “kick the bucket” translate to mean “death” as your
English teacher taught you? Given that kicking bucket cannot kill you – Anyways
that is matter for another article.
So
here are a few phrases that you probably didn’t know were gotten from the bible
1.
God forbid – Or as the
Igbos say “tufiakwa”. Obviously this was gotten from the bible where else will
they get it? From Genesis through Revelation it was said over 20 times. Well,
‘God forbid’ that I don’t put it on this list.
2.
Success has
many relatives (paraphrased) – surprised right? Was surprised to when I saw it
in Prov. 19 vs. 4. Although the original phrase used is “Success has many
friends” depending on the version of the bible, you use this explains why rich
men are always surrounded by people - don’t judge those people they are just
obeying the bible..lol. The passage also says “but the poor is separated from
his neighbour” – that is why that girl refused to allow you to ‘toast’ her is
not the witch in your village.. #wink
3.
Pride goes
before a fall (Prov. 11 vs. 2; Prov. 16 vs. 18) – I am sure that your English
teacher told you to write a story to portray that and then told you not to
copy, don’t mind him/her, he/she copied from the bible so please go ahead and
copy your story joor. Teachers live
by example, so if they can copy so can you...lol
4.
Husbandman – for those
who have seen the movie “Dumebi the dirty girl” I am sure that just like me,
you laughed at her when she used the phrase “husbandman” as a way to depict her
inability to speak proper English. Anyways the phrase was gotten from the
scripture. Don’t bother going to check for ‘wife-woman’ in the bible it is not
there, I have checked....lol
5.
Beware of
dogs (Phil. 3 vs.
2) – Surprised? Shocked? Yeah! So was I when I first saw it. Seeing the sign
post on someone’s gate always makes people scared, infact some men put these
signs to prevent boys from coming to see their grown up daughter.
#just.kidding.
Although this phrase in the bible is used to describe deceptive
people but putting this on your gate will definitely chase people away
especially we boys.
6.
Bad company
corrupts good manners (1Cor. 15 vs. 33) – so many parents use this to advice their
children and as usual our wonderful English teachers have used this to test our
writing abilities. These English teachers eeehn! they can copy oh..lol
